The Senior Reading Room

Using AI to write short stories

In our modern world artificial intelligence improves our lives in many ways. Bankers use it to detect fraud, doctors to diagnose illness, and transportation engineers to improve traffic flow. New applications for AI are being developed every day.

Caregivers can use AI to create short stories tailored to the interests of their loved ones. To demonstrate the possibilities, I used two AI services (ChatGPT and Gemini) to write stories for and about a woman with macular degeneration.

ChatGPT was developed by the company OpenAI which has adopted a mission to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. Gemini is a Google app that's available to anyone with a gmail account. Both are free and simple to use.

I used the same prompt for both services: "Compose a short story of approximately 500 words about an older woman who has macular degeneration. She loves to read and finds alternate ways to read despite her vision problem." Here are links to the two stories:

I invite you to use AI to write stories for seniors. It might also be fun to enlist their help in creating the prompts to generate stories tailored to their interests.
